Born in Tokyo in 1972. In 1996, Matsui entered the theatre company Seinendan as an actor. He then founded his own company Sample to present his own playwriting and directing independently. In 2008, Matsui's play "Kazoku no shouzou" (Portrait of a Family) was nominated for the Kishida Kunio Drama Award. He participated in Festival/Tokyo 2009 Spring with a staging of Marius von Mayenburg's "Fireface" and his "That Man's World" was presented at F/T09 Autumn. "Proud Son" (2010) won him the Kishida Kunio Drama Award. He also writes novels, essays and scripts for TV drama, as well as working as an actor and university lecturer.
