Introduction

Welcome to Festival/Tokyo. The performing arts festival launching from Tokyo will again form a highlight in Tokyo’s autumn.

The third Festival/Tokyo is organized by Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture with the aim of creating and transmitting the distinctive art forms and culture of Tokyo, Toshima Ward and the Toshima Mirai Cultural Foundation as part of the strategy for cultural city planning and promotion of Toshima City, and the established NPO Arts Network Japan. With the F/T 09 Spring catch phrase “Towards a new real” and the F/T 09 Autumn catch phrase “Evolving real”, the line-up of performances and related events whose common feature was to question reality in contemporary society and how this can be expressed, made a strong impact on both the Japanese and foreign audiences. Referring to these results, for the third festival, we are pursuing a new goal: To take a further step in becoming a centripetal force in order to build up a platform for the performing arts in Asia.

For the third edition we chose the catch phrase “Disrobing theatre” and - a festival actively engaged in the creation of cutting-edge works - various new works, world premieres and co-productions will form our lineup of 26 productions from Japan and overseas. In addition, symposiums, the F/T Station and the related events will contribute to the enriching of the wide range of festival activities. Furthermore, with the F/T Emerging Artists Program that we newly established, we wish to support young artists in creating independent performances, and based on manifold values bring forth the seeds for new trends.

Through Festival/Tokyo, we aim to pioneer the creation of values for the next generation. A driving force in creation and dialogue launching from the international city Tokyo to the world. Please look forward to Festival/Tokyo constantly heading for new challenges.
